about

Spirit of the Singers is a live recording I made at Grand Chapel Studios in January with Hannah Brine on backing vocals and Midori Jaeger on cello. There is an accompanying music video capturing the intimate setting around the cosy log fire.

Spirit of the Singers references female artists we grew up listening to and from which we found inspiration – artists like Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell, Carole King - even our mothers! - and many more – sadly we couldn’t fit all of them in! It’s about how their music and voices echo through the next generations of singer-songwriters, paving the way for all of us. It’s about standing on the shoulders of these greats and trying to continue their legacy and hopefully inspiring the next generation too.

lyrics

She sang about the war
And the way things used to be
Have you heard Buffy Sainte-Marie?

More than just a songbird
And now she’s flying free
Have you heard Eva Cassidy?

And oh can you hear
The spirit of the singers living here?
can you hear?
The echoes of their music ringing clear
oh can you hear?

She skated ‘cross the blue
Past trees of little green
Have you heard Joni Mitchell sing?

A tapestry of seasons
A Laurel Canyon Spring
Have you heard the songs of Carole King?

And oh can you hear
The spirit of the singers living here?
can you hear?
The echoes of their music ringing clear
oh can you hear?

And Linda Perry wrote
another revolution song
And we still ask ‘What’s going on?’
And we say ‘Hey ye ye ye ye ye’

And oh can you hear
The spirit of the singers living here?
can you hear?
The echoes of their music ringing clear
oh can you hear?

And now there’s just my mother
To thank for all you see
Cos the fruit don’t fall far from the tree
And her voice will always echo through me

And oh can you hear
The spirit of the singers living here?
can you hear?
The echoes of their music ringing clear
oh we can hear
If we sing their songs they’ll never disappear
Oh can you hear?
