Poem by Carolina Oliphant (published 1846)
Baloo loo, lammie, now baloo my dear;
Now, baloo loo, lammy, your ma is here:
What ails my sweet bairnie? What ails it this night?
What ails my wee lammie? is bairnie no right?
Baloo loo, lammie, now baloo, my dear,
Does wee lammie know that daddie's no here?
Ye're rockin' so sweetly on mammie's warm knee,
But daddie's a-rockin' upon the saut sea.
Now hush-a-ba, lammie, now hush-a my dear;
Now hush-a-ba, lammie; your ma is here:
The wild wind is ravin', and mammie's heart's sair,
The wild wind is ravin', and ye dinna care.
Sing, baloo loo, lammie, sing baloo, my dear;
Sing, baloo loo, lammie, your ma is here:
My wee bairnie's dozin', it's dozin' now fine,
And oh! may it's wauk'nin' be blyther than mine.

Melancholy Air

Poem by Mary Queen of Scots (c. 1561)
In my sad, quiet song,
A melancholy air,
I shall look deep and long
At loss beyond compare,
And with bitter tears,
I'll pass my best years.
Have the harsh fates ere now
Let such a grief be felt,
Has a more cruel blow
Been by Dame Fortune dealt
My heart and eyes
are where he now lies
In my springtime's gladness
And flower of my young heart,
I feel the deepest sadness
Of the most grievous hurt.
My heart can fire
Only regret and desire.
When I lie quietly
Sleeping upon my couch,
I hear him speak to me
And I can feel his touch.
Every day
He’s near me always
I shall cease my song now,
My sad lament shall end
Whose burden aye shall show
True love can not pretend
though apart,
No less in my heart

Mary's Song

Mary's Song by Marion Angus (1924)
I wad ha’e gi’en him my lips tae kiss,
Had I been his, had I been his;
Barley breid and elder wine,
Had I been his as he is mine.
The wanderin’ bee it seeks the rose;
Tae the lochan’s bosom the burnie goes;
The grey bird cries at evenin’s fa’,
‘My luve, my fair one, come awa’.’
My beloved sall ha’e this he’rt tae break,
Reid, reid wine and the barley cake,
A he’rt tae break, and a mou’ tae kiss,
Tho’ he be nae mine, as I am his.
